OpenOffice.org has recently released OpenOffice.org Suite 3.2. Portage (Gentoo’s package system) has just marked this version as ’stable’ and is readily available for those eager to install/upgrade without applying any ~amd64 or ~x86 flags. I have always been a supporter of OpenOffice but always hated how its interface looked like it was made for an elementary student or elder with vision problems. Now this problem only ever persisted in OpenOffice’s versions for Linux (and BSD/Solaris?). Windows always had ‘normal’ interface that didn’t look out of place.
This is no longer an issue with 3.2!
I’m sure there was a way to modify the menus in the earlier versions, but I always just left the interface at its default settings. The interface also takes advantage of my GTK theme as well. However, the text for the “File Edit View Insert and so on…” menus is white on white. Nevertheless, this only because of my GTK theme, but OpenOffice is the only program that I have come across with this complication.
I honestly haven’t tried any new features in the new version, but I have browsed through some of menus and it appears that it is slightly improved in terms of usability. I definitely recommend upgrading to OpenOffice 3.2 regardless of operating system but especially if you run a *nix operating system.
